Macalester's 2013-14 women's basketball season got off to a good start for the Scots, who won a close and exciting 57-53 contest over St. Scholastica at the Quinlivan & Hughes Tip-Off Tournament at the College of St. Benedict in St. Joseph.  The Scots play again tomorrow at St. Ben's, taking on Wisconsin-Superior at 1 p.m.

The Scots held St. Scholastica, last year's UMAC tourney winner and an NCAA Division III playoff participant, to just 27% shooting (15-for-56) and forced 19 turnovers.

Veronika Jakubovie (Sr., Maple Grove, Minn.) pumped in 14 points to go along with seven rebounds and three blocked shots, to lead the way for Macalester, while Taylor Pike (Sr., Ashland, Neb. / Ashland-Greenwood) added 12 points and three assists, making some key free throws in the final couple minutes to seal the win.

Just missing out on double figures was Annie Drabot (Jr., Cedarburg, Wis.) with eight points to go along with five boards and a team-high four steals.  She accounted for half of her team's eight steals.

Erin Frase pumped in 14 points to pace St. Scholastica.  The contest was tied at 29-29 at halftime.
