La Roche Advances to Third Straight Conference Championship, Will Play Penn State Behrend in Final

PITTSBURGH, PA – La Roche women's basketball advanced to their third consecutive AMCC Championship Game with a 76-46 win over Mt. Aloysius College. The Lady Redhawks will play Penn State Behrend tomorrow at 3:00PM for the AMCC's automatic berth into the NCAA Tournament.

La Roche used their press to run out to an 18-2 lead and a 30-20 advantage after twenty minutes of play.

"We knew we had to come out and play aggressive and they had trouble handling our pressure defense," said junior Leslie McPherson. "Overall, we ran the ball and played great defense."

The Lady Redhawks held Mt. Aloysius to just 23% from the field in the first half and dominated the paint with 22 rebounds and 26 points in the key. Casie Cygan netted 8 points and LaShauna Brothers grabbed 9 rebounds.

Mt. Aloysius kept it close for the first five minutes of the second half but a 10-0 run midway through the second half and an 11-0 at the end of the game put the Mounties away.

Cygan led all scorers with 18 points and Brothers had an incredible game with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Jessica Pitts registered 15 points and 8 boards and Amanda Garland added 13 points and 3 steals. Shataya White had 10 points and 10 points in the win. 

La Roche shot 51% from the field and held the Mounties to just 18 of 62 (29%). They also outscored Mt. Aloysius in the paint 52-24 and 27-13 off of turnovers.

Next up for the Lady Redhawks is Penn State Behrend.

"Penn State Berhend is a great team so we have to try and jump on them early," said McPherson. "We have to play aggressive and never back down."

La Roche will try for it's third consecutive AMCC Championship when they host the Lions tomorrow at 3:00PM. The winner will clinch an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
