Widener Holds On For 80-71 Win At Alvernia Ebersole Nets Fifth 20-Plus Game

Reading, Pa. (Feb. 9, 2013) - Alvernia University (8-15, 5-11) cut a 20-point, second-half deficit down to five points in the final minutes, but Widener University (19-4, 14-2) made enough plays to finish off an 80-71 win Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference women's basketball action at Jack McCloskey Court.

High-scoring freshman Chelsea Ebersole (Palmyra, Pa) led the way for the Crusaders with 23 points, knocking down seven 3-pointers to add to her record-setting season. Brittany Young (Columbus, NJ) put in a solid effort racking up 17 points for herself, and Kayla Long (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) reached double figures with a dozen.

Widener led 41-23 at the half then opened up a 20-point lead, 51-31 on a bucket by Kate Dellinger with 16:12 to play.  The Crusaders cut five points off the gap with a bucket from Long and corner 3 from Kerri Weber (Sicklerville, N.J./Paul VI).  The lead was down to 10, 56-46 with 9:16 to go, and facing the same deficit with 3:00 to play, the Crusaders got two free throws from Young and 3 from Ebersole to cut the gap to five.

Widener answered that charge with a layup then Young two more free throws.  Widener's Jennifer Egee, who finished 3-of-11 from the arc, hit her final 3 after the Young free throws with 1:29 to play taking some wind out of the Crusaders' sails.

Long and Young both scored in the final minute of play, but Widener hit free throws to set the 9-point final.

Dellinger led the Pride with a game-high 25 points and 11 rebounds.

The Crusaders next home game will be against conference opponent Hood College this Tuesday, February 12.
