Elizabethtown, Pa. (Jan. 12, 2013) - Elizabethtown College (6-7, 4-4) put together an 8-0 run late in the second half then made free throws down the stretch in a 65-60 win over Alvernia University (4-8, 2-5) Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference women's basketball action at Thompson Gymnasium.

The loss drops the Crusaders a bit deeper into the mess of teams that will likely fight for the last two playoff spots with Messiah (8-0), Widener (7-1), and Lebanon Valley (6-1) starting to put a stronghold on the top three spots.  Etown leads the pack of six teams with a 4-4 record.  Albright (3-4) and Lycoming (3-5) have three wins each while Alvernia (2-5), Hood (2-5), Stevenson (2-6) are still in the mix.  Lebanon Valley and Albright are playing later Saturday afternoon.

Alvernia did what they do in the early going Saturday getting two 3s from freshman Chelsea Ebersole (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) in opening up an 11-5 lead.  The lead hit its greatest point at 19-12 when senior Kayla Long (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) scored in the paint with 10:46 left in the half, but the Crusaders went cold hitting just one of their next 10 shots while Etown scored 10 of the next 12 points for a 22-21 lead with 3:45 to go in the half.

The Crusaders were able to forge ahead by three on a 3-pointer from Stevie Fortna (Lebanon, Pa./Lebanon), but Etown matched it for a 27-all score at the break.

To date the Crusaders have played fairly even up with their opponents through the first 20 minutes of play holding a slight 352-350 lead in first-half scoring through Saturday's game.  The trouble seems to come in the second half where opponents now hold a 399-323 lead over the Crusaders.

Ebersole was able to open the second half with two more 3s and the Crusaders took a 35-31 lead just four minutes in, but five straight from Etown's Nadine Yunginger swung the lead back to the hosts, 36-35.

Three minutes later Ebersole was fouled attempting a 3 and hit all three free throws, then a layup from Kaitlyn Yoh (Wernersville, Pa./Conrad Weiser) put Alvernia back up five, 43-38 with 11:42 to play.

The lead hit seven on another Yoh layup, but turnovers on three straight possessions led to a quick 6-0 run for the Jays.

Two free throws from Alisa Greco (Long Valley, N.J./West Morris Central) stemmed the tide, but the next Etown possession ended in a bucket from Taylor Alwine and started the decisive 8-0 run for the hosts.

Alvernia got back within two points twice in the final three minutes, but couldn't get the necessary stop to earn a shot to tie.

Ebersole finished with a team-high 18 points going 5-of-12 from the arc and 3-of-4 from the line.  Yoh finished with 14 points.  Yunginger and Taylor Kreider finished with 21 points apiece while Kreider and Alwine combined for 34 rebounds--two more than the Crusaders team total.

The Crusaders are on a 6-game skid dating back to early December and look to snap out of it hosting Neumann College for a non-conference game on Monday.
