Radnor, Pa. (Jan. 28, 2013) – Trailing by as many as 16 points in the second half, Alvernia University (7-12) cut the gap to a point in the final minutes, but couldn't complete the comeback in a 54-52 loss to Cabrini College (17-3) Monday afternoon in non-conference women's basketball action at Nerney Field House.

The Cavs led by 10 points at the halftime break, 30-20, then opened the second half with an 8-2 run to go up 38-22 with just over 17 minutes to play.  Alvernia cut that lead down to six points, 44-38 following a 3 from Chelsea Ebersole (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra), then were within one, 48-47 with 2:48 to play, when four straight Cabrini turnovers led to points.

The Cavs ended a nearly 5-minute scoreless drought with a pair of free throws on their next possession, then rebounded a missed free throw and connected on a 3 to go up 53-47 with 1:22 to play, but the Crusaders kept coming.  Brittany Young (Columbus, N.J./North Burlington) converted a 3-point play, then after a Cabrini miss, hit a pair of free throws to pull Alvernia back within a point, 53-52.

Cabrini hit one of two free throws with six seconds left and Young went coast-to-coast looking for the tie, but missed on the layup at the buzzer.

Cabrini extends its current win streak to 12 games and breaks a 3-game losing streak to the Crusaders.

Stevie Fortna (Lebanon, Pa./Lebanon Catholic) led the way for the Crusaders with 13 points.  Ebersole finished with 11.  Young had nine points, as did senior Kayla Long(Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) who also pulled down 12 rebounds.  Cabrini had a pair of players reach double figures led by Annie Rivituso who matched a career high with 16 points.

The game opened with a pair of missed 3s for the Crusaders, but Long tracked down the rebound on both attempts.  She scored on an offense put-back on the first possession, and reset the second possession that ended in a 3 from Fortna and a 5-2 lead for the Crusaders.

Alvernia then went scoreless from the floor over the next nine minutes missing nine shots and committing nine turnovers while the Cavs ran off 12 straight points for a 14-5 lead with nine minutes left in the half.

Fortna broke the drought with a layup and Long scored on back-to-back possessions as the Crusaders scored a 6-0 run in 60 seconds to pull back within three points, 14-11. Kerri Weber (Sicklerville, N.J./Paul VI) hit a 3 following a Cabrini bucket to cut the deficit to two, 16-14, but the Cavs ran off another 12-0 run for a 28-14 lead with just over a minute to go in the half.

Ebersole—Alvernia's newly crowned single-season record holder for 3s—hit from the arc twice in the final minute of the half around a jumper for Cabrini, and the Crusaders hit the break down 10 points, 30-20.

Alvernia went 8-for-25 from the floor in the first half and committed 17 turnovers, but were still within shouting distance at the break.  The Crusaders stared the second half with two free throws from Fortna, but Cabrini came back with eight straight points in 80 seconds for the 16-point lead.

Alvernia returns to the conference schedule on Wednesday when it hosts Albright College.
