Williamsport, Pa. (Nov. 28, 2012) - Freshman guard Stevie Fortna (Lebanon, Pa./Lebanon Catholic) hit 5-of-6 from the 3-point arc and scored a team-best 21 points for the second straight game leading Alvernia University (3-1, 1-0) to a 60-50 win over Lycoming College (0-4, 0-1) Wednesday evening in Commonwealth Conference women's baksetball action at Lamade Gymnasium.

Fortna and the Crusaders scored six points over the first five minutes of the game then errupted for a 28-6 run and a 15-point lead, 34-19 late in the first half.  Fortna scored 13 of the 28 for the Crusaders during the run including three of her five 3s.

Back-to-back Fortna 3s early in the second half pushed the lead to 18 points and a Kelsey Wolf (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) layup with 13:35 to play put the Crusaders up 20, 50-30.  Alvernia managed just 10 points over the final 13 minutes, but the lead was sufficient to earn a win in the conference opener for both teams.

Lycoming and Alvernia were picked fifth and sixth in the preseason coaches poll and with five teams making the postseason, head-to-head wins could be important later.  #10 Messiah opened the Commonwealth schedule with a win at #7 Lebanon Valley and Albright (at Arcadia), Widener (vs Etown), and Hood (at Stevenson) also opened with wins.

At Lycoming Brittany Young (Columbus, N.J./Northern Burlington) joined Fortna in double figures with 10 points and Kayla Long (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) added eight points and 11 rebounds.

Alvernia continues the early season road schedule with a trip to Albright on Saturday.
