Grantham, Pa. (Feb. 16, 2013) - Messiah College (22-3, 16-2) got 20 points and 15 rebounds from Dori Gyori in a 69-54 win over Alvernia University (9-16, 6-12) Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference women's basketball action at Messiah.
The Falcons wrapped up the top seed in the Commonwealth Championships which will begin on Monday with 5 Lycoming visiting 4 Elizabethtown. Alvernia freshman Chelsea Ebersole (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) hit four 3s-all in the second half--and finished her first season with a school record 96 3s. Her season total is second all-time in the MAC and she came within two of tying the MAC record of 98 set by Jenna Palumbo (King's College) in the 2006-07 season.
Messiah used a 22-4 run early in the first half to run out to a 25-8 lead and never looked back. Gyori had 12 points and six boards at the half and the Falcons led 34-19 at the break. Ebersole and fellow freshman Stevie Fortna (Lebanon, Pa./Lebanon Catholic) struggled to find the range in the early going. Both were 0-5 from the floor.
Both teams scored 35 points in the second half.
Ebersole was 4-9 from the floor including 4-8 from the arc. Brittany Young (Columbus, N.J./North Burlington) reached double figures with 13 points. Gyori was one of four Falcons to reach double figures.
Messiah will host the winner of the Etown/Lyco game on Wednesday in a semifinal. The other semifinal will be 3 Lebanon Valley visiting 2 Widener. The final will be next Saturday at the highest remaining seed.
