BOX SCORE
Buffalo, N.Y. (Nov. 17, 2012) - Sophomore point guard Kaitlyn Yoh (Wernersville, Pa./Conrad Weiser) scored 13 points, handed out eight assists, and was named to the All-Tournament team as Alvernia University (1-1) defeated Alfred University (0-2) by a score of 73-61 Saturday afternoon in the consolation game of the Betty Agbott Women's Basketball Invitational hosted by Buffalo State.
After giving up the first bucket of the game, the Crusaders scored 17 of the next 21 points and held the lead the rest of the way. Freshman Stevie Fortna (Lebanon, Pa./Lebanon Catholic) recovered from a tough opening night to go 6-for-13 from the floor (4-for-9 from the arc) and scored a game-high 19. Four Crusaders in all reached double figures withBrittany Young (Columbus, N.J./North Burlington) and Chelsea Ebersole (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) each adding 11.
Ebersole and Fortna both hit 3s in the Crusaders' opening run with Yoh assisting on both Ebersole 3s. Alfred cut the gap to five points twice in the first half, but Alvernia closed with a 16-4 run over the final four minutes--capped by an Ebersole 3--to take a 45-28 lead at the break.
Alvernia's lead grew to 19 points early in the second half before Alfred got back into the game with an 11-0 spurt to pull within eight points, 51-43 with 15:36 to play. Alfred missed five chances to pull closer and Yoh ended the scoring drought to push the lead to 10.
After a quick exchange the Crusaders scored four straight points and kept the gap above 10 until the last few minutes of the game.
This was the first game between Alvernia and Alfred. It's the second straight game for the Crusaders against an opponent they hadn't faced before (Trine on Friday).
Alvernia will travel to Immaculata University on Tuesday to continue the early season, non-conference slate. The Crusaders open the Commonwealth schedule a week from Wednesday at Lycoming.
