Reading, Pa. (Jan. 16, 2013) - The Alvernia University women's basketball team (6-8, 3-5) put together back-to-back wins with a 60-46 win over Arcadia University (8-8, 1-8) Wednesday evening in Commonwealth Conference action at the Physical Education Center.

The Crusaders came out dominating defensively in the first half, collecting six team steals and only allowing four points in the first 10 minutes.  They finished the half allowing just 19 points, the second time this season the Crusaders held an opponent below 20 points in the opening half.

The Knights came out strong and firing in the second half putting Alvernia on its heels, but the Crusaders quickly took back control with the strong play from their two dominant freshman Chelsea Ebersole (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) and Stevie Fortna (Lebanon, Pa./Lebanon Catholic) who both put up 16 points.

"I thought Stevie had the turning point of the game with those back-to-back steals at mid-court," said Alvernia head coach Kevin Calabria.

Fortna picked off a pair of passes and converted both into uncontested layups in a 12-second span that put Alvernia up 51-34 with nine minutes left to play.

Kaitlyn Yoh (Wernersville, Pa./Conrad Weiser) also had a strong game for the Crusaders. Her seemingly endless energy allowed her to dish out five assists as well as score seven points of her own to compliment a strong defensive effort.

"I thought the defense was the key for us tonight," said Calabria.  His team totaled 13 steals and forced 27 turnovers—the most from an opponent this season.

"We closed out well on the perimeter," continued Calabria. "We're nowhere near perfect yet, but we're getting better."

The Crusaders will face Lebanon Valley on Saturday in Annville and get their first look at new conference opponent Hood College next Monday on the road.
