BOX SCORE
Owings Mill, Md. (Jan. 26, 2013) - Commonwealth Conference newcomer Stevenson University (7-10, 4-8) hit two key jumpers as the first half wound down to take the 33-30 halftime lead, on their way to defeating Alvernia University (7-11, 4-8) by a score of 69-66 Saturday afternoon at Stevenson.  Freshman Stevie Fortna (Lebanon, Pa./Lebanon Catholic) put up a game-high 22 points and Chelsea Ebersole (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra) dished out a game-high four assists.

Ebersole also hit three three-pointers, breaking the record for threes in a season with 68.  She breaks Theresa Bray's 15-year old record of 67 3s in a season and still has at least seven games left to play.

Fortna opened all scoring with a three-pointer that proved to be Alvernia's only points for the first five minutes of play, as the Mustangs went on a 10-3 run to open the game.  After a quick free throw, and a three-pointer from Ebersole, Alvernia was right back in it, 10-7 at 14:56.  Alvernia brought the game within one, 12-11, at 12:35 after a jumper fromKelsey Wolf (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion), and went on to tie the game 17-17 at 10:12 thanks to another three-pointer from Ebersole.  After some back and forth scoring, Alvernia took the lead back with two good free throws from Kayla Long (Manheim, Pa./Manheim Central) that gave the Crusaders the 21-19 lead at 8:15.  Stevenson answered with a six-point run, and ended the first half with six of the final eight points to take the slim 33-30 lead at halftime.

Long opened the second-half scoring with a layup to get Alvernia back within one, before the Mustangs put up four quick points.  A layup and three-pointer from Fortna, followed by another Long layup tied the game at 39 with 14:16 left to play.  After two lead changes, the Mustangs took the 46-45 lead at 10:57 and did not relinquish the lead until a Fortna layup at 4:14 that made it 61-60 in favor of Alvernia.  A layup from each side made it 63-62 Alvernia before a three from Stevenson at 2:21 gave them the lead for good.  Alvernia managed a free throw and a layup in the final 1:55 to suffer the 69-66 loss.

The Crusaders are back in action on Mon. Jan. 28th when they travel to Cabrini for a non-conference game beginning at 7:00 p.m.
