First Half Run Leads Albright Past Alvernia

Reading, Pa. (Jan. 30, 2013) – Albright College (9-11, 5-8) scored 14 straight points to break a 17-all tie in the first half and grabbed control of the game on its way to a 68-45 win over Alvernia University (7-13, 4-9) Wednesday evening in Commonwealth Conference men's basketball action at the Physical Education Center.

Alvernia jumped out to an 8-4 lead four minutes into the game then got a layup from Kelsey Gill (State College, Pa./State College Area) at the 9:05 mark to knot the game at 17-17.  Albright answered with a layup from Kelecia Harris that started the 14-0 run.

The lead grew to 16 points on back-to-back layups for the Lions and was at its largest of the half when Kristi McFadden scored the final bucket of the frame, a 3 with 1:21 to go that set a 38-21 score at the break.

Alvernia showed some life opening the second half with a 3 from Chelsea Ebersole (Palmyra, Pa./Palmyra), but Albright came back with eight straight for a 22-point lead.  The lead stayed in that range until late when the Lions pushed it to 28-points, 68-40 with 3:23 to play.

Ebersole led the way for Alvernia with 11 points.  Harris recorded a double-double to pace the Lions with 14 points and 12 rebounds.

With the win, Albright moves a game ahead of Alvernia in the Commonwealth standings and into a tie for fifth place with Lycoming College which fell 58-32 to Messiah on Wednesday.

Alvernia continues the conference schedule Saturday when it plays host to Elizabethtown College.
