Reading, Pa. (Jan. 5, 2013) - Eighth-ranked Messiah College (12-1, 6-0) build a 17-point first half lead en route to a 66-49 win over Alvernia University (4-6, 2-3) Saturday afternoon in Commonwealth Conference women's basketball action at the Physical Education Center.
The Falcons broke open a 15-11 game hitting three straight 3s at one point during a 16-3 run that put them up 31-14 with 3:25 left in the half. From there the teams traded buckets and Messiah remained up 17 at the break, 37-20.
The Crusaders applied a more aggressive half court press defense midway through the second half and were able to swing the momentum in their direction and pull within 12 points of the Falcons, but Messiah overcame the run and regained control of the game leading by 16 or more for the last seven minutes of the game.
Falcons forward, Dori Gyori led all players with 15 points while Chelsea Ebersole (Palmyra, Pa/Palmyra) tallied 14 for the home team. Messiah hit 8-of-20 3s and their aggressive defense held Alvernia to just 3-of-10 from the arc. The Crusaders entered the game averaging nearly 19 3-point attempts per game and almost six makes.
Alvernia freshman Kelsey Wolf (Red Lion, Pa./Red Lion) reached double figures for the second time this season and matched her career high with 12 points.
The Crusaders continue the conference schedule with a game at Widener on Wednesday.
