GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. -- Gwynedd-Mercy secured the #2 playoff seed with a convincing 101-84 win over Rosemont on Senior Day Saturday afternoon at the Griffin Complex.
The Griffins (17-8, 13-3 CSAC) now receive a first-round bye and will host a semifinal game of the CSAC Tournament on Wednesday at 7 p.m. against an opponent TBA. Monday's first-round games will determine the opponent.
Prior to the game, the team honored its lone senior, Liza Leyes with a special ceremony and flowers for her and her parents.
Natasha Matthews, Nicole Dougherty and Shea Wassel each scored 20 or more points apeice as the Griffins used a 12-2 run to start the second half and were able to leave the Ravens in their rearview mirrors.
Both teams entered the game with identical conference records giving meaning to today's winner in a first-round bye. Gwynedd was also looking to avenge a 99-77 loss to the Ravens back on January 26th.
Matthews had game highs of 25 points and 14 rebounds. She was 9-of-12 from the field including a perfect 7-for-7 at the line. Dougherty scored 19 of 21 points in second half while adding five assists, for boards, and two steals. Wassel added 20 points along with seven caroms.
Ashley Montecchio led Rosemont (17-8, 12-4 CSAC) with 24 points. Teammate Liz Coyne added 22 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Dominique Sellers chipped in 15 points, seven rebounds.
Back-to-back three-pointers from Lauren Smith and Kristen Fuery gave GM a double-digit lead (35-23) at the 6:23 mark. The Griffins had their largest lead of the half after Matthews' bucket put Gwynedd up, 46-25, late in the first. Rosemont closed in, and used a 12-0 to close the half to make it a nine-point game at the break.
Dougherty's three-pointer opened the second half and kickstarted a 12-0 spurt. From there, Smith would hit twice from the line to seemingly give Gwynedd an 82-59 edge with 8:28 to go.
Montecchio would score on a twisting layup to cap a 20-8 run to help pull the Ravens within 11 (90-79) with just over three minutes in the game. Dougherty would help ice the game as she connected twice at the stripe and would score on a driving layup on the next possession to restore a 15-point edge.
Smith finished with nine points and six assists. Fuery also chipped in nine points along with five assists.
As a team, GM shot identically in each half, going 19-of 37, to go 38-of-74 (51.4%) for the game. Rosemont was just 34.3% (12-of-35) in the first, but rebounded with a 45.9% effort in the second. However, the Ravens were good on 19-of-34 trips at the line (55.9%), while the Griffins were 18-of-25 (72%). Each team hit on seven treys and were almost the same in points off turnovers (15-12), second-chance points (16-16), fast-break points (8-6), and bench points (18-18). Gwynedd though dominated the paint, outscoring Rosemont, 62-38, and holding a 49-37 rebound edge.
