NEW YORK, N.Y. – The St. Joseph's College (Brooklyn) women's basketball team placed four players in double figures and defeated Hudson Valley Women's Athletic Conference (HVWAC) foe Yeshiva University, 70-51, Wednesday evening at Baruch College.
The Lady Bears (12-9, 3-0 HVWAC) won their third-straight conference game moving a season-high three games over .500, while the Maccabees (4-11, 0-3 HVWAC) have dropped six of their last seven games.
St. Joseph's was paced by junior Megan Moran (Syosset, NY/St. Dominic's) who nearly picked up her first double-double of the season dropping in 15 points shooting an efficient 6-of-11 from the field while securing eight rebounds. Junior Kelly McNamee (Glendale, NY/Mary Louis) poured in a season-high 14 points along with swiping a career-high five steals.
Senior Janine Doran (South Ozone Park, NY/Archbishop Molloy) almost collected her second double-double of the year contributing 13 points while bringing down eight rebounds while sophomore Taylor Raccuglia (Brooklyn, NY/Bishop Kearney) also nearly missed a double-double scoring eight points, corralling seven caroms while rejecting a career-high-tying five shots. Senior Teresa Mangan (Cleveland, OH/St. Joseph's) chipped in 12 points for her 11th game of the season in double-figures.
Yeshiva was led by sophomore Stephanie Greenberg who stuffed the stat sheet recording her second double-double of the season scoring a career-high 30 points, securing 12 caroms, swiping five steals and rejecting three shots. The Lady Bears held in check double-double machine Rebecca Yoshor who ranks among the NCAA leaders with 12 on the season holding her to a season-low six points and five rebounds.
The Lady Bears opened the game scoring the first seven points and would build a double-digit lead, 27-17 at the 10:24 mark of the first half before Yeshiva went on a 10-1 spurt to cut the St. Joseph's lead to one, 28-27, with 7:51 remaining before intermission. The Lady Bears countered with a 14-5 spurt building their lead back to double-digits and went into the locker rooms with a 46-35 lead.
The second stanza saw St. Joseph's score nine unanswered bringing their lead to 20, 55-35, with 16:47 remaining. The Lady Bears would increase their lead to a game-high 27 points, 66-39, at the 5:45 mark on a Raccuglia jump shot making the deficit to much to overcome for the Maccabees.
St. Joseph's defense stifled Yeshiva forcing 34 Maccabee turnovers resulting in a 33-9 advantage in points off turnovers for the Lady Bears. Despite being outrebounded by a 65-49 margin, St. Joseph's was able to outshoot Yeshiva shooting 35 percent (28-of-79) compared to the Maccabees 24 percent (17-of-72).
The Lady Bears conclude their four-game HVWAC stretch when they travel upstate to take on Albany College of Pharmacy and Health Sciences on Saturday, February 2nd in the lead game of a doubleheader starting at 2 p.m.
