NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Senior Kelly Halverson poured in a career-high 20 points in an impressive 7-for-9 shooting performance to lead the 22nd-ranked Captains past Mary Baldwin tonight, 74-39. CNU (22-2, 15-2) used a balanced attack behind their lone senior, who moved into a tie for the all-time winningest four-year period in program history.

Halverson and the rest of the CNU Captains have won 104 games over her career, paired with just 13 losses. CNU has won a record 88.9% of their games since Halverson joined the team four years ago.

She had a stellar night to help make her way into the record books, scoring a career-high 20 points. She dropped in four three-pointers and missed just two shots all night. For good measure, the senior from Poquoson added three steals, an assist and one rebound.

The Captains cruised to a 43-16 edge at halftime, shooting 48.6% from the floor in the opening stanza. Halverson had a team-high 13 at the break and eight more Captains figured into the scoring column. Rookie Jordan Miller and junior Nicole Mitchell each each had six.

Mary Baldwin, who slipped to 0-24 overall, 0-17 in the USA South, was led in the first half by Shanice Miles. Miles had six points, five rebounds and a pair of blocks.

The starting lineup played limited minutes in the second half and the rest of the Captains stepped up to hold onto a big lead. Nine CNU players scored at least four points and eight different players had at least one assist in the game.

Miller finished with 11 points on 5-of-11 shooting, adding four rebounds and a pair of steals. CNU had 15 thefts in the game, getting three apiece from Brandi Holland and Halverson.

Miles finished with a team-high 15 points and Shamanda Washington added a game-high 12 rebounds for the Fighting Squirrels. Washington was just two points shy of a double-double, and added five blocks.

CNU has just one regular season game remaining before heading to Fayetteville, N.C. for the USA South Tournament. The Captains will close the year on Sunday, Feb. 17 at 5:00 pm as they host Averett University at 5:00 pm for Senior Night.
