NEW YORK – A late runner banked off of the glass with just two seconds left and the City College of New York's second-half surge ended in heartbreak as the Beavers (4-19, 4-11 CUNYAC) were turned away by the Lightning of Lehman College (4-18, 4-10 CUNYAC), 53-51, despite Bria Fisher's 19 point, 19 rebound performance on Wednesday evening at the Nat Holman Gymnasium.
Fisher was a beast on the offensive glass, picking up five offensive rebounds en route to a 19 rebound game, the most for the freshman since Jan. 12 of this season, a game against the Lightning. Syreeta Williams added 11 points and seven rebounds, while Kendra Rivers and Joyce Li netted eight each.
CCNY led by two points with 1:31 remaining, but Keonti Powell hit a jumper to tie the game with just over a minute left to play in regulation before banking a jumper to give the Lightning a one possession lead.
The loss makes for an interesting end to the season as the Beavers, Lightning and the Cardinals of York College are fighting for seeding in the 2013 CUNYAC / Con Edison Basketball Championships.
The Beavers defense was strong all game, holding the Lightning to 30 percent shooting from the field but led by Jennifer Navarro's 21 points on 5-of-11 from long distance, Lehman defeated City College.
CCNY stays home and hosts the College of New Rochelle on Saturday, Feb. 9. Tip-off is set for 12 p.m.
