LeBlanc Goes Off for 16 in, 68-50, Win Over UMass Boston

Boston, Mass.–Freshman guard Danielle LeBlanc (Warwick, RI) finished with a game-high 16 points, while senior guard Ashley O'Dell (Lincoln, RI) added 15 points and four assists, as the Rhode Island College women's basketball team cruised past UMass Boston, 68-50, on Saturday afternoon at the Clark Athletic Center in Little East Conference action.

 

The Anchorwomen (13-8, 6-4 LEC) snap a two-game losing skid with the win and currently sit in a tie for third place with Eastern Connecticut in the Little East Conference standings.

 

RIC forced the Beacons (12-8, 4-6 LEC) into 25 turnovers, while holding the hosts to just 31 percent shooting (15-for-49) from the floor on the day.

 

After storming out to a 9-0 lead, Rhode Island College quickly took a 16-point lead thanks to a bucket by freshman forward Vandell Andrade (Providence, RI) to make it, 23-7, with seven minutes left in the half. However, the Beacons bounced back to close out the frame with a 16-11 run to cut the deficit to 11 heading into the break.

 

RIC opened the second half on a 15-8 run to jump ahead by 19 with eight minutes left to play, and soon surged ahead by as many as 22 to seal the victory and the season sweep of UMass Boston.

 

 Andrade totaled 10 points, eight rebounds, three steals, two blocks, and two assists to help pace the Anchorwomen, while senior forward Melanie Cline (Glocester, RI) chipped in with 12 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Sophomore guard Megan Sewall (Portsmouth, RI) recorded a game-high four steals off the bench to go along with four points, four rebounds and two assists.

 

 Freshman forward Olivia Murphy (Canton, MA) paced the Beacons with 11 points and 12 rebounds, while sophomore center Kirsten Morrison (North Reading, MA) led UMass Boston in scoring with 13 points.

 

 RIC shot 39 percent (24-for-62) from the field, 29 percent from three (4-for-14) and 76 percent (16-for-21) from the free throw line.

 

In upcoming action, Rhode Island College will continue Little East Conference play at home against UMass Dartmouth on Tuesday, Feb. 5 (5:30 p.m.).
