William Paterson Women’s Basketball Distances Itself Late from NJCU, 67-51

WAYNE, N.J. – Juniors Dana Jeter (Hamilton, N.J./Steinert) and Floriana Borova (Cresskill, N.J./Cresskill) combined to score 41 points to help the William Paterson women's basketball team (16-6, 10-4 NJAC) pull away late from visiting New Jersey City (5-17, 1-12 NJAC), 67-51, Feb. 2.

 

With the victory, the Pioneers assured themselves of at least a top-four finish in the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC) standings.  The top two teams will receive a first-round bye, and the third and fourth seeds will host opening-round games of the NJAC Tournament on Feb. 16.

 

WP got off a to solid start, pulling ahead by a 13-5 count less than six minutes into the contest, but a sluggish effort made it just a four-point halftime lead at 32-28.

 

It was more of the same for William Paterson to start the second half, as New Jersey City took the lead on three different occasions during the period's first 10 minutes, including a 47-45 score with 10:33 on the clock.  The Pioneers finally responded with two straight layups by freshman guard Shakira Negron (Paterson, N.J./Immaculate Conception) and back-to-back three-pointers from junior guard Kristine Jackiewicz (Quakertown, Pa./Quakertown) and Borova, pulling ahead 55-47 with 8:29 left.  WP finished the game by scoring the final nine points while keeping NJCU off the scoreboard for the last 4:53.

 

Jeter led all players with 21 points and 12 rebounds, adding five assists while registering her ninth career double-double.  Borova posted 20 tallies, nine boards and six assists, and Jackiewicz and Negron each chipped in eight points.

 

Jade Medley scored 13 points and Ashley Vazquez had 11 for New Jersey City.

 

William Paterson will play a non-conference game at Kean Wednesday, Feb. 6, at 6:00 p.m.
