In their first meeting back in December, it took until the final seconds for the UW-Superior women's basketball team to pull out a dramatic 70-65 win over the UW-Stevens Point Pointers.
Their second meeting took even a bit longer to decide.
The Pointers rallied from an 11-point second half deficit and overcame a last second, game-tying three-pointer by Connie Urmanski (Edgar, Wis./Edgar) to hold on for an 89-78 overtime victory over the Yellowjackets at Berg Gymnasium in Stevens Point.
UW-Superior fell to 16-4 overall and 8-3 in WIAC play while the Pointers, who went 31-of-40 from the free throw line, improved to 16-4 and 8-3 with the victory.
The Yellowjackets got off to a good start in the first half, jumping out to a 7-4 lead behind a three-pointer by Kristen Nett (Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port), a jumper by Hillary Peterson (Sturgeon Lake, Minn./Moose Lake) and a layup from Deandra Vavra (Cambridge, Minn./Cambridge-Isanti) in the first 3:12 of action.
UW-Superior remained in the lead for most of the first half, taking their largest lead at 28-20 on two more free throws by Vavra with 4:45 remaining on the clock before heading into the intermission holding a 35-29 lead thanks to a three-pointer by Allyssa Lindberg (Marquette, Mich./Marquette) in the final minute of the opening frame.
Five quick points from Sam Barber in the first 2:17 of the second half brought the Pointers to within 37-34 with 17:43 remaining in regulation.
The Yellowjackets went on to score the nine of the next 13 points to up their lead to 46-38 following another jumper by Lindberg with 14:15 showing on the clock.
UW-Superior continued to hold the lead over the next 10:49, taking their largest lead of the game at the 10:24 mark when Sally Linzmeier (Valders, Wis./Valders) connected on two free throws to give the Yellowjackets a 53-42 bulge.
But the Pointers steadily rallied from there, finally tying the game 62-62 on a driving layup by Alyssa Olp with 3:26 remaining in regulation.
Three straight free throws from Myranda Tyler and Barber in the minute gave UW-Stevens Point a 69-66 edge in the final 12 seconds.
Vavra found Urmanski in the left corner for the tying as time expired however, sending the game into overtime even 69-69.
In overtime, the Pointers connected on 16 free throws while limiting the Yellowjackets to just 4-for-10 shooting to pull away for the victory.
