Double-Doubles From Mitchell & Green Lead CNU Past Meredith, 75-54

More news about: Christopher Newport

NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Four Captains finished in double figures and a pair registered double-doubles as CNU sailed past Meredith College today, 75-54. Nicole Mitchell scored a season-high 19 points and added 13 rebounds, while Camry Green added 13 boards as well, chipping in 16 points for Christopher Newport. The Captains improve to 16-2 overall, with a 9-2 record against the USA South.

The CNU offense was slow to get started and Meredith (5-12, 2-9) hung tough through most of the first half. The Avenging Angels led by one, 16-15, with 6:08 remaining in the first half, but the Captains would close the half on a big run. Led by Mitchell, scoring eight, CNU would close out the first 20 minutes on an 18-5 run to take a big 13-point lead at the break, 33-20.

Mitchell finished the first half with a double-double already, scoring 13 of her game-high 19 points in the opening stanza. She added 10 rebounds and went 5-of-8 to help the Captains shoot 44%.

In the second half, CNU started to spread the offense and continued their pressure defense, forcing Meredith mistakes. The Angels finished with 22 turnovers in the game, leading to 21 Christopher Newport points. The Captains had 18 steals on those 22 turnovers, led by Tia Perry's seven thefts. Perry had a strong second half, and finished with 11 points, and Kelly Halverson rounded out the CNU double-digit scoring efforts with 13 points. The senior guard knocked down three three-pointers and was a perfect 4-for-4 from the line.

Meredith was strong defensively as well, forcing 24 CNU turnovers, but struggled on the offensive end, shooting just 35% in the contest. Rah'nika Jones came off the bench to lead the scoring with 15 points, while grabbing eight rebounds. Keyanka Bailey had a double-double, and finished just four assists shy of a triple-. She scored 10 points and hauled in 10 rebounds for the Angels, while McKenzi Edwards scored 11.

The Captains remained perfect at home this weekend, in their first home games since December 15. CNU is now 6-0 in the Freeman Center and will hit the road again next weekend with a trip to Georgia to face LaGrange College and Piedmont College in conference action. The Captains will next be home the following Wednesday, February 6 against N.C. Wesleyan at 7:00 pm.
