UMF women’s hoops takes advantage of Green Mountain miscues in 57-38 win

FARMINGTON, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington women's basketball team outscored visiting Green Mountain College 17-3 over the first 10 minutes of the second half, which propelled UMF to a 57-38 North Atlantic Conference win over Green Mountain Friday night at Dearborn Gym.

The win keeps UMaine-Farmington in a three-way tie for fourth place in the conference standings with a 6-5 league record, 6-11 overall. Green Mountain fell to 3-13, 1-10 NAC, with the loss.

UMaine-Farmington senior Rachel Clement (Gray, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester) led the Beavers with 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting from the field. Starter Kelsey Graffam (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) added eight points, as did reserve forward Ayla Allen (Rumford, Maine/Mountain Valley).

Allen also pulled down seven rebounds to lead a UMF squad that outrebounded the Eagles 45-34, including 24 offensive boards.

Green Mountain's Jacque Caster charted 11 points and seven rebounds with four assists to lead the Eagles, while Chelsea Paul finished with nine points and nine boards.

UMaine-Farmington shot just 31.0 percent (22-of-71) from the floor, but was aided by Green Mountain's 32 turnovers. Those Eagle giveaways led to 35 Farmington points, nearly enough to alone win the game.

With the Beavers holding a 24-20 halftime lead, Green Mountain allowed three-and-a-half minutes to tick away before getting its first bucket of the second half. UMF held the Eagles scoreless for the next five minutes, until a Caster foul shot broke at the 11:44 mark broke the scoring drought. Another two minutes passed before Green Mountain made a field goal, by which time Farmington held a 41-25 lead.

UMaine-Farmington's lead reached its widest with 6:21 to play, when a Clement layup extended the Beavers' advantage to 51-26.

UMF will return to the court on Saturday afternoon against Castleton State in a 3:00 p.m. tip-off, while Green Mountain completes its two-game Maine trip on Saturday in Waterville against Thomas College.
