BRONX, N.Y. – Freshman Jennifer Navarro set a new CUNY Athletic Conference record with 11 three-pointers made on Wednesday night, as the Lehman College women's basketball team rolled to an easy 81-25 win over visiting Medgar Evers College. Lehman remains in seventh place in the CUNYAC standings at 3-6, having secured a bid to the post-season CUNY Athletic Conference Championships.
The Lightning have now won two of its last three games, and are 3-15 on the season.
Despite scoring a career-high 33 points in the game, Navarro (Jamaica, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) was not the leading scorer for Lehman. Junior Keonti Powell (Bronx, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) led Lehman with 37 points, including seven three-pointers of her own.
Navarro's record setting night became complete at the 11:18 mark of the second half, when she drained a three ball to set the new conference record. The previous record of ten made in a game was held by CSI's Maureen Keag, who set the record at the APEX against Lehman in the CUNYAC Tournament, on February 23, 1999.
The NCAA record of 15 made three's in a single game was never threatened tonight, as Navarro came out of the game for good shortly after her 11th three pointer.
"I had no idea about the record," said Navarro. "[Head] Coach [Eric Harrison] said 'One more,' and I said, 'One more why?' I was just having fun out there."
Several other NCAA records were narrowly missed in the game, including three-pointers in a game by a single team (NCAA record is 22, Lehman had 19), and three-pointers in a game by two teams combined (NCAA record is 27, Lehman and MEC combined for 24).
The Lightning made their first two shots of the game, both three-pointers, by Navarro and Powell. Medgar Evers managed to score on two of its next three possessions, cutting the lead to 6-4. From there, the overmatched Cougars struggled. Lehman went on to lead 48-10 at the half en route to the win.
Powell was also the team's leading rebounder with 17 rebounds. Senior guard Jasmin Castro-Lopez finished with five points, six rebounds, and eight assists.
Up next for Lehman is a Friday night affair with Hunter College on January 25. Tipoff is slated for 7:00 p.m. in the Lehman College APEX.
