MILWAUKEE - The Lakeland College women's basketball team made just four field goals in the second half, losing a halftime lead and falling 48-42 to Alverno College Tuesday night in a Northern Athletics Conference game.

The Muskies went ice cold in the second half, scoring just six points in the first 15 minutes of the second half and watching a seven-point halftime lead slip away. Alverno gained a split of the season series between the two teams and also won an important battle for position in the NAC North Division, improving to 8-2 in conference play (11-6 overall) while Lakeland dropped to 5-6 in the NAC and 7-11 overall.

The Muskies led almost the entire first half and jumped out to a 21-9 lead on a layup by Becky Mayo (Sr.-Gladstone, Mich.) with 8:37 left in the half. Lakeland went without a field goal the final 4:05 of the half but still led 26-19 at the halftime break.

Lakeland missed its first six shots of the second half and Alverno took a 28-26 lead on a three-pointer by Anna Boteva with 15:36 to play. Mayo came back with a jumper and two free throws to give the Muskies the lead back, but the Muskies would go nearly ten minutes without a field goal. While Lakeland struggled, the Inferno slowly pulled away and took its biggest lead at 44-32 on a layup by Jamie Hoernke with 4:50 to play.

The Muskies came alive in the final five minutes and got within 46-42 on another basket by Mayo with 1:07 to play. Alverno missed four of six free throws in the final minute, but Lakeland had a turnover and two missed shots on its final three possessions.

Mayo finished with 16 points and 11 rebounds, while Leah Eisner (Jr.-Stevens Point, Wis.) added 12 points and seven boards. The Muskies shot 31.3% for the game (15-of-48) and hit just two of 12 shots from behind the three-point arc.

Alverno was led by Devon Gorman with 15 points. The Inferno shot 35.2% (19-of-54) but committed just nine turnovers, seven less than the Muskies' total of 16 turnovers.

Lakeland returns home Saturday to face Rockford (Ill.) College at 2 p.m. at Woltzen Gymnasium in an NAC matchup.
