BRONX, N.Y. – Despite 29 points from freshman Jennifer Navarro in a matinee on Martin Luther King, Jr., Day, the Lehman College women's basketball team fell to guest NYU-Polytechnic 67-56. This was the final non-conference game of the season for Lehman, who now stands at 2-15 on the season. Poly is now 5-10 overall.

The Lightning held the lead early at 5-4, when senior guard Jasmin Castro-Lopez (Bronx, N.Y./Wings Academy) hit a jumper from the elbow. Minutes later, Navarro (Jamaica, N.Y./Grover Cleveland) made her second three-pointer of the game to knot the score at eight points apiece. The game remained tight, and with just 5:57 to play in the first half, Lehman trailed by only two points, as freshman Tiffany Coke (Bronx, N.Y./John Jay) grabbed an offensive rebound and went strong to the hole for a layup, recording her first points of the season. Poly would later go on a 7-0 run to end the half, taking the 33-24 lead into the break.

In the second half, the lead would fluctuate from as many as 13 points, to as few as six points. Every time Lehman would go on a short burst, Poly would answer. A major factor for Poly was the play of senior Shelby Bruns, who made her first seven baskets of the game, and missed only one shot on the day, going 9-of-10 from the field.

For Lehman, Navarro tied her career-highs in both points (29) and three-pointers made (7). Castro-Lopez ended the day with 11 points and seven rebounds, as junior Keonti Powell (Bronx, N.Y./John F. Kennedy) added 10 points and as many rebounds. Freshman Luisayra Madrigal (Bronx, N.Y./Msgr. Scanlan) added seven rebounds, including six on the offensive end of the floor.

For the game, the Lightning shot 29.0% from the field, while Poly shot 41.8%. On the boards, the Fighting Blue Jays out-rebounded the Lightning, 47-39.

This is a busy week for Lehman, who will host a pair of CUNYAC foes this later in the week. On Wednesday, Medgar Evers College comes to the APEX, before Hunter College visits on Friday evening.
