Brickley's 14 points, four rebounds lead Lyons
SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Springfield College women's basketball team edged out Wheaton, 41-39, in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) action on Saturday morning at the James Naismith Court inside Blake Arena.
Sophomore Abbie Brickley (Sandy, Utah/Skyline) turned in 14 points on 5-of-10 shooting, four rebounds, two steals and one assist for the Lyons. FreshmanKiley Shoemaker (Fayetteville, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) had seven points, five boards and two blocks. Sophomore Laura Pierce (Hampstead, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) added five points, two rebounds, one assist and one steal while classmate Kenzie Kuhn (Glenwood Springs, Colo./Glenwood Springs) contributed four points, four steals, four caroms and three assists.
The Pride were led by junior forward Tamara Tribble's (White Plains, N.Y./Valhalla) game-high 15 points, eight rebounds and four steals. Senior forwardEmily Walker (East Lyme, Conn./East Lyme) and freshman guard Heather Lewis (Saratoga Springs, N.Y./Saratoga Springs) tallied seven points each while sophomore guard Andrea Moschetta (Harrison, N.Y./Harrison) and sophomore forward Jaimie Bickelhaupt (Brookfield, Conn./Brookfield) notched six points apiece.
Late in the second half, Brickley gave the Lyons their second lead of the stanza with an old-fashioned three-point play at the 1:48 mark. Brickley scored inside against a triple team and swished home the ensuing free throw after being fouled down low.
Tribble answered for Springfield with a fastbreak layup with 51-seconds remaining and the Pride never surrendered the lead for the duration of the contest. Tribble added to the gap with 21-seconds to play with a layup and a made free throw to push the score to a two-possession game (41-37). Kuhn capped the scoring with 12-seconds to go on a layup through traffic.
The largest lead of the game came at the 17:57 mark of the second half as Moschetta buried a pair of free throws to make it 24-19. Springfield held a slim, 20-17, advantage at halftime as Tribble led the hosts with seven points and Bickelhaupt compiled six points.
Wheaton shot 27.1-percent (16-for-59) from the field, 12.5-percent (2-for-16) from beyond the arc and 83.3-percent (5-for-6) at the free throw line. Springfield connected on 31.8-percent (14-for-44) of its shots from the field, posted a 0-for-5 performance from three-point range and went 65.0-percent (13-for-20) from the free throw line. The Pride held a 22-20 margin in points in the paint and a 16-12 differential in points off of turnovers. Springfield also outrebounded the Lyons, 41-37.
Springfield splits the regular season series with Wheaton after falling to the Lyons, 45-40, in Emerson Gymnasium earlier this season on January 8. The Lyons (7-10, 4-6 NEWMAC) host Coast Guard on Wednesday, January 23 at 8 p.m. The Pride (3-13, 1-9 NEWMAC) welcome Clark University on Wednesday at 7 p.m.
