POUGHKEEPSIE, NY (January 19, 2013) – Sophomore forward Colleen O'Connell hit back-to-back jumpers to break a 56-56 tie and the Vassar College women's basketball team overcame a 12-point first half deficit to rally for a 65-58 victory over Union College in Liberty League action on Saturday afternoon at the Athletics & Fitness Center.

In a second half that was tied five times, O'Connell's consecutive jumpers, separated by a scant 10 seconds, broke a 56-56 deadlock at the 3:02 mark. The Dutchwomen were unable to rally, missing their next four shots, while the Brewers closed out the game connecting on six straight free throws.

The victory lifts Vassar to 11-3, 4-2 in the Liberty League. Union drops to 10-6, 5-3. Vassar returns to action with a home game against Farmingdale State on Tuesday, January 22 at 6:00 p.m. Union hosts William Smith in Liberty League play on January 22 at 6:00 p.m.

The Dutchwomen threatened to make quick work of the Brewers, jumping out to an 11-1 lead and then buoyed by 8 for 11 shooting from the field built a 23-11 margin at with 10 minutes until halftime. Union's senior guard Shayla Madden and sophomore forward Kate Thompson, were a tough combination to control in the opening first half, with both scoring eight points each.

Trailing by 13 points, Vassar went on an 11-1 run over 5:06 to draw within 24-22. Vassar junior guardCydni Matsuoka kept Vassar close with nine first half points.

The torrid shooting that propelled Union into its big lead, began to fizzle and the Dutchwomen went cold from the floor, going 3 of 22 from the floor to close out the half and into the first five minutes of the second half. Although Union held a 30-28 halftime lead, Vassar scored 10 straight points for a 38-32 lead at the 15:15 mark of the second half, getting production from Matsuoka, O'Connell and sophomore guard Michaela Janowski. The Brewers capable handled the Dutchwomen pressure, committing only 11 turnovers in the game.

Union battled back in the contest, however, initiating the first tie of the second half at 45-45 after a layup from Thompson.

Vassar freshman guard Caitlin Drakeley, who scored all of her 10 points in the second half, nailed a 3-pointer and a layup to lift Vassar into a 54-49 lead with 6:10 remaining. The Dutchwomen battled right back into the contest with five straight free throws by junior guard Kelsey McDonald and a jumper by freshman forward Cailin Schmeer in the paint to force a 56-56 tie.

O'Connell then drained her consecutive jumpers for Vassar's 60-56 lead that held.

Vassar placed three players in double figures, led by Matsuoka's 14 points. O'Connell and freshman guard Alex Moon each had 11 points.

Union got 12 points each from McDonald and Madden and 10 from Thompson.
