CLAREMONT, CA -- The Caltech women's basketball team dropped a 79-43 decision to Bethany Lutheran at the CMS/Caltech Winter Classic on Sunday afternoon.
A strong low post presence aided the Vikings in the win as they posted a 63-30 rebounding edge. The starting trio of low block players for Bethany Lutheran combined to score 36 points while grabbing the same number of rebounds. Briana Brandts (15 points, 12 rebounds) and Shelbly Wiederhoeft (14 points, 15 rebounds) led the charge.
The Bethany Lutheran defense held Caltech to just seven made fields in the opening 20 minutes en route to holding a 35-18 lead at the halftime horn.
Unfortunately for the Beavers the story in the second half was similar as they converted on seven of their field goal attempts. Bethany Lutheran knocked down 13 field goals for the second straight half en route to the win.
Stephanie Wong, once again, took team high scoring honors for Caltech. The first-year racked up an 18-point effort in 40 minutes of action. She also swiped five steals in helping the Beavers to a team total of 13.
For her efforts in the four-team, two-day event Wong was named to the all-tournament team.
