Comeback Bid Comes Up Just Short for Women’s Hoops

More news about: Stevens

HOBOKEN, N.J. (January 18, 2013) – Despite a game-high 22 points from junior guard Molly Spadaro (Sewell, N.J.), the Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team's comeback bid ran out of time in a Friday night Empire 8 matchup with Nazareth College. The Ducks fell to 7-7 and 4-2 in the league.

The Golden Flyers dominated the first half, and built up a 30-17 lead at the break. Stevens shot 23 percent from the floor in the first and was out-rebounded 25-19.

In the second half, the Ducks flipped the script and outscored Naz by 10, but came up just shy of taking the lead in the closing seconds. Spadaro had 15 of her 22 in the second half and shot 9-of-14 from the floor, including 2-of-3 from three-point range. The junior from Sewell also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.

After trailing by as much as 18 in the first half and double digits in the second, the Ducks trimmed the Naz lead down to one point with 33 seconds to go. Miranda Ripken (Fallston, Md.) knocked down a three-pointer with an assist to fellow freshman Dylan Krause (Atlanta, Ga.) to get the Ducks in striking distance. Stevens fouled on the next possession and had a prayer, but could not get the game-tying points as time expired.

Nazareth shot more than twice as many free throws as Stevens (31 to 13)…the Flyers made half of their threes (6-of-12)…Nazareth scored the first seven points of the game and led wire-to-wire.

Stevens will turn right around and host Houghton College on Saturday at 2 p.m. at Canavan Arena.
