No. 12 Montclair State Coasts Past Kean to Remain Unbeaten, 76-44

Montclair, NJ – Sophomore forward Melissa Tobie (Elizabeth, NJ, Roselle Catholic) posted a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds while Montclair State put four players in double figures as the No. 12/16 Red Hawks coasted to a 76-44 victory over Kean University at the Panzer Athletic Center on Saturday.

Junior guard Nicosia Henry (Bolingbrook, IL, Bolingbrook) added 14 points and nine rebounds as MSU remained unbeaten at 16-0 while beating the Cougars (3-10) for the first time in seven years, a span of nine games. Montclair's last victory over Kean came on February 18, 2006 in Union as Montclair State prevailed 77-71.

Senior Erika Jones (Perth Amboy, NJ / Perth Amboy) put forth a solid effort with a game-high 23 points along with 10 rebounds as Kean dropped its second straight following a pair of victories.

For the second straight contest, Montclair State led for all but one possession. Tied 2-2, Tobie gave the Red Hawks the lead an four straight from Janitza Aquino (Kearny, NJ, Kearny) gave MSU an 8-2 lead three minutes into the contest.

Jones, who scored all 17 of Kean's points in the first half, scored on a layup to make it 15-10 with 10:52 remaining before MSU exploded for 22 consecutive points over the next eight minutes. Jen Kuczynski (Springfield, NJ, Jonathan Dayton) began the spurt with a pair of free throws and five points in the run as did Tobie giving the Red Hawks a 37-10 lead with 2:56 to go before halftime.

Montclair State led 37-17 at the break.

In the second half, Kean would get as close at 16 points as Jones dropped in a layup to get the Cougars within 41-25 however Sarah Kluth (Lynbrook, NY, St. Mary's) answered with a layup and Kuczynski connected on back-to-back three-pointers as the lead was boosted back to 49-25 with 13:14 left.

Kuczynski finished with 13 points with Aquino getting 11 along with three assists and five steals. Freshman Shalette Brown (Somerset, NJ, Franklin Township) added eight points, five rebounds, four assists and four steals for Montclair.

Sophomore guard AnnaRose Pierre (East Orange, NJ / Newark Tech) had 14 points for Kean, which struggled from the field as the Cougars were 19-of-54 (35 percent) which included 11-of-21 from Jones. Kean was also just 1-of-13 from behind the arc and committed 27 turnovers which turned into 23 MSU points.

Montclair State returns to action on Wednesday, January 16 hosting Rowan University at 6:00 pm. Kean is home on Monday, January 14 taking on No. 7 Amherst College at the Harwood Arena at 6:00 pm.
