TERRE HAUTE, Ind. – Transylvania held Rose-Hulman to just seven points over the final 15 minutes Saturday and pulled away to a 58-46 win in a Heartland Conference women's basketball contest.
Transy is now 11-4, 7-1 in HCAC play, while the Engineers are 6-9, 2-6 in conference play. The Pioneers came into the contest leading the conference race by a game over three teams and have now won three straight decisions.
Rose-Hulman scored first in the second half to go up 34-33 and the Pioneers led by only one, 40-39, when the Engineers scored at the 15:11 mark. But from that point on, it was all Transy. The Pioneers went on a 17-2 run to take a 57-41 lead with 1:57 to go on an Alex Botkin layup.
Botkin had a career-high 17 points to go with eight rebounds, hitting six of eight from the field. Nicole Coffmanadded 16 points to the attack and Katelyn Smith pitched in 10. Transy hit 47 percent from the field as the home team, which was over 60 percent in the first half, finished at 44 percent for the game.
Rose-Hulman, which was led by Cassidy Cain's 13 points, outscored Transy 21-0 from three-point range, but the Pioneers held an 18-7 edge at the free throw line. Transy also outrebounded Rose-Hulman, 30-20.
Alex McKenzie had seven points and five rebounds for Transy and Madisen Webb added six points and five boards. They also combined for six assists.
Rose-Hulman canned three free throws at the end of the half to pull within 33-32 at the break after Transy went up by 11 at the 8:07 mark. Both teams shot extremely well in the half, with Transy sinking 13 of 22 for 59 percent and the home team converting 11 of 18 for 61 percent.
The Engineers were also six of eight from long range, outscoring Transy 18-0 from behind the arc. Botkin led the Pioneers at the half with nine points and Coffman chipped in eight. Rose's Cain led all scorers with 11 points.
The Pioneers are back in action on Wednesday, when they travel to Cincinnati to take on Mt. St. Joseph at 7:30 p.m.
