More news about: UW-Whitewater

Platteville led 6-5 with 17:36 left in the first half -- but that was the last time the Pioneers were on top.  UW-W followed with a 9-0 run to take a 14-6 lead, eventually upping the margin to 22-10 at the 6:00 mark.  Platteville turned the situation around with a 7-0 run at the end of the half to close within 24-23.  UW-P scored eleven points off Whitewater turnovers in the half, but shot themselves in the foot with a 26% field goal percentage in the first twenty minutes.

Sophomore forward Alyssa Krajco scored ten points for the Pioneers to lead all scorers in the half.  Warhawk freshman center Lisa Palmer led both teams with six rebounds.

Still leading by just one point, 26-25 early in the second half, Whitewater went on a 9-0 run to build the margin back to double digits, 35-25.  The Warhawks' largest lead, 46-33 at 12:24, came on a Megan Theune layup.  Twice in the second half UW-P whittled the Whitewater lead to five, the last occurring at 3:13 and the score 62-57, but UW-W pushed back to a double digit lead several times in the waning minutes.

Even though Platteville got off 18 more shots than Whitewater, the Pioneers couldn't make the shots count, shooting 34% from the field in the game.  UW-W shot 46%, and made 17-20 foul shots, compared to 9-10 for UW-P.

UW-P senior guard Elizabeth Lawinger led all scorers with 19 points, with teammate Alyssa Krajco adding 14.  Lawinger also tied for her team lead with five rebounds and had a game high five steals.  Theune scored 18 points for Whitewater, for her season high, including 6-7 from the charity stripe.  Junior guard Kaitlyn Thill scored eleven points and shared team honors with Theune with four assists apiece.  Senior center Cortney Kumerow blocked five shots, tied for twentieth in the UW-W record book.  Palmer would up the game honors with eight rebounds, helping Whitewater to a 42-33 advantage on the boards.

UW-W heads up to the northland to face UW-Superior Saturday afternoon.  The Warhawks' next appearance at Kachel Gym in Williams Center will be Saturday, January 16 at 6:00.  That contest, part of a men's (4:00) and women's doubleheader, is the third annual Treyton Kilar Youth Day sponsored by Rocky Rococo's.  The day will feature activities for kids, a pregame ice cream party, postgame autographs, and the first 100 youth will receive a Warhawk bank.  Admission is free for all youth in 8th grade or under.  All proceeds raised by the event will be donated to the Treyton Kilar Field of Dreams project.  For additional information please contact Leah Thyne by phone at 262-203-2785 or email at thynel@uww.edu.
