DOYLESTOWN (PA) – Wilkes University recovered from an early 15-point deficit on the road and notched an 82-70, Freedom Conference victory over Delaware Valley College.
The Lady Colonels (9-4, 1-2 Freedom) scored the first three points of the game, but the Aggies (6-8, 0-3) ran off 18 in a row, including 10 from sophomore Brenna Coll, for the 15-point lead just six minutes in.
Wilkes responded with 12 straight, including eight from Chelsea Brown, to make it an 18-15 contest midway through the half. Later in the half, the Lady Colonels had another 12-0 spurt, this time highlighted by Elena Stambone's six points, to take the lead good and they went into the break with a 41-33 advantage.
Wilkes outscored Delaware Valley, 18-7 over the first nine-plus minutes of the second stanza to take its largest lead of the contest at 59-40. The Aggies made one final push and got to within 10, 70-60, on a Kelsey Kilpatrick trey with 3:25 to go, but Wilkes responded with back-to-back buckets to put the game away.
Stambone finished with 26 points and nine steals as she helped the Lady Colonels force 27 Delaware Valley turnovers. Brown had 17 points, 11 rebounds, four steals and three blocks while Lindsey Chester added 12 points and eight boards.
Eireann Anastasi paced Delaware Valley with 24 points while Coll finished with 18 points and eight rebounds. Senior Emily Soper had nine points and eight rebounds and, in the process, became just the 10th player in program history to surpass the 1,200-point plateau in a career (1,204).
