Riverdale, N.Y. – The College of Mount Saint Vincent Women's Basketball team was downed for the third straight time on Wednesday evening with a 59-50 loss to Skyline Conference rival NYU-POLY. Junior guard Tanisha Montague (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Dolphins in scoring for the third straight game with a team-high 11 points.
NYU-POLY used a 5-0 run early in the first half to break an 8-8 tie keyed by an Alyssa D'Apice three-pointer, before the Dolphins rebounded with nine of the next 12 points to pull in front for the first time in the game with 11:50 to play before the break. Desiree Rosa (Dumont, N.J.) hit a three to spark the run and Montague converted a jumper in the lane to push the Mount in front 17-16.
Following the Montague jumper, Mount Saint Vincent went over four minutes without scoring before Shanice Robinson (New Rochelle, N.Y.) broke the dry spell with a jumper at the 7:30 mark. The Jays started a 10-2 stretch during the drought to open a 24-19 lead after another D'Apice triple.
Mount Saint Vincent would battle back to knot the score at 28-28 with 3:41 left in the half after back-to-back buckets from Sinead Gooney (Bronx, N.Y.) and Andrea Sinaly (Middle Village, N.Y.). After the Sinaly conversion, the Dolphins would not score again until a Yen Pham (Queens, N.Y.) lay-up at the horn. NYU-POLY closed the half on a 9-2 spurt to carry a 37-30 lead into the locker room.
Despite shooting 13-for-44 from the field in the opening 20 minutes and not taking a free-throw, the Mount stayed in the game on the strength of four three-point field goals. Rosa knocked in three for the Mount and led the team with nine points after 20 minutes of play.
NYU-POLY shot an efficient 51.9-percent in the first half and was paced by 11 points on 4-for-4 shooting overall from D'Apice. Catherine Thompson chipped in nine points for the Jays.
The Dolphins quickly sliced the NYU-POLY lead to a single point coming out of halftime with six straight tallies, including four from Montague. The Jays would stretch the lead back to four points, before the Mount claimed the lead back on a Shannon Koch (Kings Park, N.Y.) fast break bucket with just under 11 minutes left in regulation.
Including the Koch conversion, the two teams traded the lead six times over the next three minutes before the visitors took the lead for good on a Tabitha Larsen triple with 7:47 to play in the game. Following a Gooney basket with 9:12 on the clock, the Dolphins failed to score until a Nicole Oliver (Carmel, N.Y.) layup at the 2:55 mark. NYU-POLY went on the close the game on 14-4 run over the final nine minutes to pick up its initial league win of the season.
The Jays placed three players in double-figures and were led by a game-high 14 points from D'Apice. She finished 4-for-7 from the floor, 2-for-3 from behind the arc and 4-for-5 from the free-throw line. Thompson closed the game with 13 points, five rebounds and three assists, while Aisha Abu Marzoug scored 11 points off the bench. Shelby Bruns finished the night with a game-high 14 rebounds and also led all players with four assists.
Montague wrapped up the game shooting 5-for-18 overall to go along with four assists, three rebounds and three steals. Rosa scored all nine of her points in the opening 20 minutes and knocked down three of the team's four three-point field goals. Gooney closed a solid night with eight points and six boards for the Dolphins.
NYU-POLY was held to 26.1-percent shooting in the second half to finish the game at an even 40-percent overall. The Jays outscored the Dolphins, who took only one free-throw in the game, by 16 from the charity stripe.
Mount Saint Vincent shot 29.1-percent on the night and was held under 30-percent for the fourth time this season. The Dolphins did out-rebound the Jays 50-42 and outscored NYU-POLY in the paint 24-18.
The loss drops Mount Saint Vincent to 4-7 overall on the season and to 0-4 in Skyline Conference play. The Dolphins will step out of conference on Monday night when they welcome CCNY to the Peter Jay Sharp Center. Tip-off with the Beavers is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
