Quick start keeps No. 4-ranked Toms in conference lead

The No. 4-ranked Tommies got 14 points from Taylor Young and 13 from Jenna Dockter in Wednesday night's 65-43 win at Gustavus in a showdown of MIAC women's basketball co-leaders.

St. Thomas (11-1 overall, 9-0 MIAC), extended its season win streak to 11 and their victory streak against conference opponents to 33. They also ended an eight-game win streak of the Gusties (9-3, 8-1), who had a season-low scoring total.

UST raced to a 12-0 lead in the first 4:30 and pushed the margin to 33-15 at halftime.

The Toms helped forced 24 Gustie turovers and had a 36-31 rebounding edge. Kelly Brandenburg had 10 points, Carley Emery scored nine points and Kellie Ring had eight rebounds.

St. Thomas has won four games in the last eight days and leads Gustavus and Concordia-Moohead by one game near the halfway point of the MIAC race.

The Tommies spoiled a reunion game for Gustavus first-year head coach Laurie Trow Kelly, a legendary player for St. Thoms (1989-93). Trow Kelly, who still holds the conference career scorig and rebounding records, led the 1990-91 Toms to the NCAA championship s a sophomore center.

The Tommies play Saturday afternoon in St. Joseph against St. Ben's.
