SCRANTON (PA) – Brenna Coll scored a career-high 30 points and added eight rebounds, seven steals and six assists to lead Delaware Valley College to an 84-78 road victory over non-conference foe Marywood University.
The win was the fourth straight for the Aggies as they hit the .500 mark at 6-6. It was just their fourth game away from James Work Gymnasium all season and the first since November 28. The loss dropped the Pacers to 6-5.
Coll, a sophomore, topped her previous high of 27 points set against Penn State Brandywine earlier this season. She was 10-for-19 from the field (1-for-2 from 3point land) and 9-for-11 from the foul line. The steal and assist totals were also career bests.
Both teams had five-point leads in the first half but there were also eight ties in the stanza, the last at 40-40 when Coll hit a pair of free throws with four seconds left. Marywood scored six of the first seven points of the second stanza, but the Aggies followed with a 15-6 spurt to take a 56-52 advantage with 12 minutes remaining.
The Pacers fought back and took a three-point lead with 6:28 left, but Delaware Valley responded with nine straight points, including five from Coll, for a 70-64 advantage. Marywood made things interesting as it pulled to within one, 76-75 with 1:04 to go, but Coll sank a pair of free throws, recorded a steal and hit another two from the line for a five-point lead. Agatha Drozd then hit two free throws to make it a three-possession game with 10 seconds remaining.
As a team, the Aggies shot 25-for-31 (80.6%) from the foul line, including an 18-for-22 (81.8%) effort in the second half. Drozd was 8-for-10 from the stripe and finished with 16 points. Shannon Barlow notched 13 points before fouling out while Eireann Anastasi added 12 points.
Emily Soper, who was averaging a double-double on the season (13.8 ppg, 10.8 rpg), was in foul trouble all afternoon and saw just 23 minutes of action before picking up her fifth and final foul. The senior managed just two points and seven rebounds, but she did move into third place on the Delaware Valley all-time rebounding list as her 762 career boards passed Michelle Shirk's total of 758 from 1986 to 1989.
Nora Joyce came off the bench to lead the Pacers with 20 points. Danielle Terranella and Lindsey Schroth had 13 and 10 points respectively while Maggie Presnal added eight points and a game-high 13 rebounds.
