Smith College Outscores Westfield State, 82-60; Pioneers Improve To 9-1

WESTFIELD, Mass. – Senior guard Devon Quattrocchi had game highs of 18 points and four steals to lead Smith College to an 82-60 victory over Westfield State University in non-conference action on Wednesday, Jan. 2.

Smith, playing its first game in three weeks, boosted its record to 9-1. Westfield, playing for the third time in four days, is 8-5.

The Pioneers' trapping press rattled the Owls in the first half as the visitors raced to a 43-21 intermission lead. Both teams scored 39 second-half points.

Smith jumped out to a 6-0 lead in the opening 47 seconds, forcing Westfield to call a timeout. Westfield trailed 12-9 with 13:54 left in the first half then Smith went on a 15-2 run to take a 27-11 lead at the eight-minute mark.

Quattrocchi (10 points), Paulina Solos (8 points) and Sydney Parkmond (7 points) paced the Pioneers in the first half.

Pounding the ball inside, Westfield pulled to with 12 points, 55-43, with 11:24 left in the game. But two buckets by Parkmond followed by a Quattrocchi jumper and 3-point basket gave Smith a 64-45 lead at the 8:25 mark.

Three other players scored in double figures in the Pioneers' balanced attack: Parkmond (16), Alyssa Barrett (11) and Solis (10). Rosa Drummond and Amanda Zakoske both tallied eight points.

Smith outrebounded Westfield, 50-45, with Drummond grabbing a team-high seven caroms. Smith shot 43 percent form the field (33-76) and handed out 21 assists, with Solis recording six dishes.

Sophomore center Gabby Felix led the Owls with 14 points and nine rebounds and sophomore guard Jen Ashton finished with nine points and seven assists. Senior guard Briana Kelly scored 12 points.

The Owls shot 34 percent from the field, including a 1 for 8 effort from 3-point range, and committed 24 turnovers.
