Early run sends Louisiana College past Transy

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – No. 24 Louisiana College broke away from a 10-10 tie Saturday with a 26-7 run, and the Wildcats went on to post a 78-63 win over Transylvania in the Coaches vs. Cancer Classic hosted by Huntingdon College.
 
The Pioneers, who defeated Oglethorpe on Friday, drop to 8-3 on the year while Louisiana College is 9-1.
 
Transy shot 35 percent from the field for the game and placed three players in double figures, paced by freshman guard Katelyn Smith, who had 21 points and six rebounds, and Alex McKenzie, who added 12 points and 11 boards. Madisen Webb pitched in 10 points to go with four rebounds.
 
The Pioneers were done in by turnovers. A total of 33 turnovers led Louisiana to a 40-16 advantage in points off miscues. The Wildcats committed 20 turnovers. Neka Jones led four Wildcats in double figures with 13 points.
 
Louisiana shot 39 percent from the field and were outrebounded by the Pioneers, 52-40.  Alex Botkin had seven points and 11 boards for Transy, which saw five players grab at least six rebounds.
 
Transy set a season-high with 10 made three-pointers during Friday's game, but misfired on all five of its long attempts on Saturday. Louisiana, meanwhile, converted eight of 29 triples. The Pioneers did have a 25-14 scoring edge at the free throw line.
 
McKenzie's double-double was her second of the year and Smith's 21 points were a career high.
 
Transy returns home to face Heartland Conference rival Franklin on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. The Pioneers are 4-0 in HCAC play, tied with Defiance for the early conference lead. Franklin was picked to finish second in the HCAC race in a preseason vote of league coaches while Transy was third.
