Long ball fuels Transy win over Oglethorpe

MONTGOMERY, Ala. – Transylvania  connected on a season-best 10 three-point baskets Friday, fueling the Pioneers to a 74-52 win over Oglethorpe in the Coaches vs. Cancer Invitational hosted by Huntingdon College.
 
The Pioneers improve to 8-2 on the season while the Stormy Petrals drop to 2-9.
 
Nicole Coffman and Madisen Webb each poured in 18 points to key a balanced Transylvania attack. Katelyn Smith notched 13 points to go with nine rebounds. Alex McKenzie had six points and eight boards while Alex Botkin contributed five points and 10 rebounds.
 
 Kalin Williams had 13 points to lead Oglethorpe.
 
Transy was 24 of 59 overall from the field for 35 percent, but made 10 out of a season-high 24 tries from behind the arc. Oglethorpe was just six of 20 from long range. Transy was also 16 of 24 from the free throw line and had a whopping 60-32 edge on the boards.
 
The Pioneers recorded 18 assists on their 24 buckets.  Smith, Webb, and Terra Lucas each was credited with four assists.
 
Webb, Smith, and Coffman combined to can 10 of 21 shots from behind the arc with Webb and Coffman each making four of eight shots.
 
Transy led at intermission, 41-32, and led from start to finish. The Pioneers' largest lead was the final margin of 22 points. Transy never led by fewer than eight in the second half.
 
Transy will complete play in the Classic on Saturday, facing Louisiana College at Noon Eastern time. Its next home game is on Jan. 2 against Franklin at 7:30 p.m. at the Beck Center.
