HOBOKEN, N.J. (December 15, 2012) – The Stevens Institute of Technology women's basketball team dropped a hard-fought 52-41 match to The College of New Jersey (7-2) on Saturday afternoon. The matchup was an exciting back-and-forth affair, with three ties and eight lead changes in the second half alone.
The first half was a defensive struggle, with the Lions and Ducks combining to shoot 26 percent from the floor (7-27 and 7-26, respectively). TCNJ's Kelly Coughlin (Trumbull, Conn.) led all scorers with six points in the first period. The teams also combined for 28 turnovers in the first 20 minutes.
The two sides exchanged blows throughout the much more entertaining second period. Megan Petuskey (Mays Landing, N.J.) and Dylan Krause (Atlanta, Ga.) hit back-to-back threes beginning at the 17:14 mark that gave the Ducks their first lead since they led 2-0 to start the game. Miranda Ripken (Fallston, Md.) knocked down another three pointer two minutes later to put the home team ahead again. Unfortunately for Stevens, those were the only three makes from behind the arc in 17 attempts on Saturday.
Cassie Nicholas (Sicklerville, N.J.) converted a layup with 9:53 to go, which tied the game for the next three minutes, and then Nicholas scored again to re-take the lead at 5:50. From there, TCNJ finally asserted itself and went on a 15-3 run to end the game, making the final score rather misleading.
Stevens won the rebound count 29-25…both teams' shooting percentages were almost identical (32 to 31 percent)…Stevens committed eight more turnovers and eight more personal fouls as well.
The Ducks will not play again until the New Year, which they will begin at Empire 8 foe Houghton College on January 4 at 6 p.m.
