GREENSBURG, Pa. – Frostburg State outscored Pitt-Greensburg 40-27 in the second half and rallied from a nearly 20-point deficit, but in the end, FSU couldn't overcome the early hole and suffered a 63-60 loss in non-conference action, Saturday.
The game featured just one lead change as Frostburg (3-6) grabbed a 2-0 edge with the game's first basket. On the ensuing trip down the floor, UPG (5-4) hit a three-pointer and never trailed again. FSU had the score within one basket for much of the opening half, but Greensburg closed out the opening stanza with 17-4 run for a 36-20 lead at intermission.
Courtney DiBridge, who hit the game's first three-pointer on Pitt-Greensburg's first offensive possession, opened the second half with another three that gave the hosts a 19-point cushion, 39-20.
Despite the deficit, FSU didn't back down and slowly chipped away at the UPG advantage. Starting just prior to the midway point of the second half, Frostburg collected a 10-2 scoring run that helped cut the deficit to just three points, 58-55, with 3:27 to play in regulation.
After Pitt-Greensburg pushed its lead back to 61-55, seniors Brynn Arnone and Stephanie Straka hit a pair of layups as FSU trailed by just one, 61-60, with 25 seconds showing.
Frostburg turned the ball over on its next possession and was forced to foul. Pitt-Greensburg then hit two free throws that handed it a three-point edge, 63-60, with 23 seconds remaining. FSU had one final chance following a timeout, but a three-pointer was off the mark and Greensburg escaped with the victory.
Straka led the Bobcats with 20 points, her second-straight game with 20 or more and third of the season. Arnone and sophomore Ronje' James each added 11.
Kayla Dames powered Pitt-Greensburg with 17, followed by Morgan Biddle with 15 and DiBridge with 13.
Frostburg returns to the floor this Thursday with its final home game of the 2012 portion of its schedule with Lebanon Valley at 6:00 pm.
