Warhawks Roll Past Kalamazoo

The UW-Whitewater women's basketball team, ranked sixteenth in the latest D3hoops.com poll, topped Kalamazoo College 101-45 in the Post-Exam Jam hosted by Hope College in Holland, Michigan Friday, entering the school's record book with the fifth highest scoring output in women's basketball history and the most points scored in a game since December 12, 2007. The 56-point margin ties the fifth largest in UW-W history. The Warhawks improve to 8-2 and Kalamazoo is 0-8.

Senior center Cortney Kumerow got the offense going for UW-W making her first three jumpers of the game. Junior guard Kaitlyn Thill added two free throws at 17:12 to give the Warhawks an early 8-0 lead. A 14-0 mid-half run gave Whitewater a 24-6 advantage with 11:48 on the clock. Freshman Abbie Reeves sank a three-pointer at 1:11 to give UW-W its largest lead of the half, 50-21. Kalamazoo ended the half on a 9-2 run to make the score 52-30 in favor of the Warhawks going into the lockerroom.

UW-W shot 54% (22-41) compared to 41% (12-29) for the Hornets in the first twenty minutes. The Warhawk defense forced 15 turnovers while committing just five in the first half. Kumerow was 4-4 from the field to match senior forward Emily McCullick's eight points to lead UW-W. Junior guard Mary Merg added seven points and grabbed five boards. Four Hornets posted six points in the first half for Kalamazoo.

The Warhawks allowed just 15 points in the second half. UW-Whitewater shot 52% from the field making 41-79, tying the school mark for the fifth most made field goals in a game. Whitewater forced 26 turnovers and committed just 10.

Seventeen Warhawks saw the court with fifteen scoring, led by Kumerow's 16 points. Reeves added twelve and Merg and McCullick posted ten apiece.

The Warhawks will face seventh-ranked Hope College Saturday, December 15 at 2:00 to wrap-up play in the tournament. The next home contest for UW-W is set for Wednesday, January 9 against UW-Platteville at 7:00.
