St. Louis, Mo., Dec. 12, 2012 – Junior forward Jordan Rettig and junior guard Lucy Montgomery each scored 18 points as the No. 5 Washington University in St. Louis women's basketball team earned an 81-48 win over Fontbonne University Wednesday evening in the Wydown Showdown at the WU Field House.
Rettig recorded the first double-double of her career with a career-high 18 points and 11 rebounds, while also tallying a career-high five assists. Montgomery also set a career-high with 18 points on 6-of-11 shooting from three-point range, including 5-of-7 in the first half. Sophomore forward Melissa Gilkey also finished in double figures for the Bears with 12 points, seven rebounds and two blocked shots.
The Bears equaled their season high with nine three-pointers and were a perfect 14-of-14 from the free-throw line. Washington U. also pulled down a season-high 62 rebounds, just five shy of the single-game school record, including 29 on the offensive glass. The Bears finished with a 32-4 advantage in second-chance points in the game.
Fontbonne took an 8-4 lead in the first five minutes of the game before a pair of three-pointers by Montgomery and a second-chance basket by Rettig gave the Bears a 12-8 lead. After a timeout by the Griffins, sophomore guard Maddy Scheppers scored on a putback to stretch Washington U.'s lead to 14-8. The Griffins pulled to within 19-14 on a three-pointer, but Gilkey scored back-to-back baskets to spark a 12-2 run that extended the Bears' lead to 31-16 with 6:49 to play in the half. Back-to-back threes by Montgomery pushed Washington U.'s lead to 21 points (43-22) before a three-pointer by the Griffins made it 43-25 at halftime.
In the second half, the Bears stretched their lead to 27 points (57-30) on Montgomery's sixth three-pointer, while holding Fontbonne without a field goal for the first four minutes of the half. Washington U. pushed its lead to as many as 36 points (74-38) with 4:35 remaining before finishing with the 33-point win.
Washington U. shot 36.7 percent from the field (29-79) in the game, while Fontbonne shot 32 percent (16-50). The Bears had a 62-29 rebounding advantage, and also finished with nine steals and a season-high six blocked shots in the game.
Washington University (7-1) returns to action Saturday when it hosts Spalding University in a 1 p.m. contest at the WU Field House.
