FARMINGTON, Maine -- Colby-Sawyer women's basketball held the University of Maine at Farmington to its lowest shooting percentage of the season on its way to a 60-47 North Atlantic Conference win over the Beavers, Saturday afternoon at Dearborn Gym.
UMaine-Farmington (1-8, 1-3 North Atlantic Conf.) shot just 23.5 percent (16-of-68) from the field, including a 5-of-20 mark from 3-point range.
Meanwhile, Colby-Sawyer (5-4, 4-0 North Atlantic Conf.) used a strong first-half shooting performance to jump out to an 8-0 lead on Farmington, and extended its lead into double-digits following a Taylor DeSanty (North Adams, Mass.) jumper with just under 11 minutes to play.
The Chargers connected on 15 of their 33 field goal attempts in the first half, and went into the locker room at the break with a 35-18 lead.
UMF rallied early in the second half, hitting four of its first six shots including 3-pointers by Kenni Norton (Strong, Maine/Mt. Abram) and Rachel Clement (Gray, Maine/Gray-New Gloucester). The Beavers pulled to within four of the Chargers at the 11:30 after a 9-0 run, but Colby-Sawyer answered with back-to-back treys by Cailin Bullett (Millbury, Mass.) and a third by Ashley Fruzetti (Raynham, Mass.) to squelch UMF's comeback bid.
Kelsey Cahill (Cumberland, R.I.) led Colby-Sawyer with 19 points on a 9-of-18 shooting performance, and hauled down a team-high eight rebounds. DeSanty charted 14 points. Bullett finished with nine points, all on 3-point buckets, and dished out eight assists.
Norton and Clement each tallied nine points for UMaine-Farmington, with Norton handing out three assists. Kelsey Graffam (Falmouth, Maine/Falmouth) hauled down seven rebounds to go with her four points.
The Beavers outrebounded the Chargers, 51-39, including 22 offensive rebounds that yielded 19 second-chance points for Farmington. However UMaine-Farmington's 17 turnovers converted to 21 points for Colby-Sawyer.
UMaine-Farmington now goes into a winter break, and will not play again until Friday, Jan. 4, when the Beavers play at Johnson State College. Colby-Sawyer also takes a break for exams and the holidays, and will return to action with a game at Wesleyan on Mon., Dec. 31.
