GETTYSBURG, Pa. – Junior Cori Younghans (Succasunna, N.J./Roxbury) hit a runner with 16 seconds remaining to give Gettysburg a one-point lead, but Katie Lytle knocked down a pair of free throws with only five seconds left to lift Swarthmore College to a 53-52 victory in Centennial Conference women's basketball action inside Bream Gym on Saturday.
Younghans finished with a career-high 14 points for Gettysburg (4-4, 3-2 CC). She was 5-of-6 from the floor and 2-of-3 from the free throw line. Freshman Jessica Porter (Narberth, Pa./Lower Merion) turned in a season-high 17 points and grabbed six rebounds, while sophomore Jenna Swope (Warminster, Pa./Archbishop Wood) pulled down a career-high 10 boards.
Swarthmore (7-0, 4-0 CC) remained unbeaten thanks to a monster night from Lytle, who finished with 20 points, 16 rebounds, three assists, and five steals. She was 6-of-14 from the floor and 8-of-9 from the free-throw line. Jessica Jowdy knocked down five three pointers as part of a 19-point effort off the bench, while Elle Larsen grabbed 11 rebounds.
Swarthmore led by as many as 12 in the second half, including 36-24 with 12:54 remaining following a three-pointer by Jessica Jowdy. Gettysburg quickly erased the deficit, mounting a 17-3 run to take its first lead since midway through the first period. The Bullets turned in the final 12 points with a bucket by Porter setting the score at 41-39 with 7:53 to play. Younghans helped fuel the run with two three-pointers and a pair of free throws.
Swarthmore returned the favor with a 12-point outburst of its own capped by back-to-back three-pointers by Jowdy and Eliza Polli to regain a double-figure lead (51-41) with just over four minutes left in the game.
Gettysburg's stout defense, which held its fifth consecutive opponent below 30 percent shooting from the floor, kept the Garnet from netting another field goal during the remaining time. In the meantime, the hosts kept the theme of double-digit runs alive with 12 consecutive points. Porter hit back-to-back buckets and Swope scored on a putback to pull the score to 51-49 with two minutes left.
After Gettysburg pulled to 51-50 on a free throw by first-year Emily Duggan (Marmora, N.J./Ocean City), the Garnet came up empty on its next two possessions. That opened the door for Younghans following a timeout, as the junior guard drove down the right side and banked in a running lay-up over the defense with 16 seconds left to give the Bullets a 52-51 advantage.
Swarthmore came right down the floor and following a missed jumper in front of the bucket by Larsen, Lytle gobbled up the carom for one of the visitor's 20 offensive boards. Lytle was fouled on the play and was sent to the line for two attempts. After swishing the first shot, the Garnet guard rattled home the second for the 53-52 lead.
Younghans raced down the floor following the in-bounds pass but stepped on the sideline before getting a shot off with only one second left.
Gettysburg went nearly 10 minutes without recording a point to start the game, but Swarthmore was only marginally better with two field goals during the same span. The Bullets would take their only first-half lead at 6-5 following a fast-break lay-up by Younghans at 9:51. The advantage would swing in favor of the visitors with Swarthmore jumping ahead 21-10 on a three-pointer by Jowdy with four minutes before the break.
The Garnet led the Bullets 25-17 heading into halftime.
Swarthmore finished just 19-of-68 from the floor (27.9 percent). However, the Garnet knocked down seven three-pointers and out-rebounded the hosts 51-43. Gettysburg finished 20-of-57 from the field (35.1 percent) and 10-of-17 from the free throw line (58.8 percent).
Gettysburg returns to action following the holiday break with its own Days Inn Tournament on Jan. 2-3. Joining the Bullets for the event will be Alvernia University, Gwynedd-Mercy College, and Salisbury University. Gettysburg opens with Alvernia at 6 p.m. on the opening day.
