Junior guard Danielle Gravel (Sidney, NY/Sidney) scored 16 points with 6 assists, 5 rebounds and 3 steals as the Keuka College women's basketball team picked up its fifth straight win, 68-43 over SUNY Cobleskill Saturday afternoon inside the Iorio Gymnasium in Cobleskill, NY.
Senior Mariah Mouzon (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) added 10 points as eight different members of the Storm (5-1, 2-0 NEAC) had five or more points.
Mouzon shot 5-for-8 while sophomore Erica Pendrak (Utica, NY/New York Mills) scored eight points on 3-for-6 shooting as Keuka shot 42.2 percent (27-for-64).
"Today was 40 minutes of intensity, which we hadn't done in our previous four games, so it's exciting for us heading into the break," said Katie Marcella, Keuka's first-year head coach.
"It's always a battle at Cobleskill, so to jump out to an early lead and win by 25 was nice. Everyone stepped up when we needed them, Mariah had a good game and Dani exploded for us and had a nice game, too."
Pendrak also had four assists and two rebounds while senior Montana McDonald (Romulus, NY/Romulus) added seven rebounds and six points for the Green and Gold.
McDonald's contributions were especially impressive to Marcella. After Mouzon picked up her second foul just three minutes into the game, McDonald entered and had all six of her points and all seven rebounds during the opening half.
"That was huge, Montana played a phenomenal game for us," said Marcella. "For Montana to come in and play 90 percent of the first half was huge. Both offensively and defensively she stepped up for us and was really able to come in and have a great game."
Sophomore Amanda Kubitz (Spencerport, NY/E.J. Wilson) and freshman Mackenzie Cole (Ogdensburg, NY/Ogdensburg Free) each added six points while junior Taylor Szwec (Candor, NY/Candor) and sophomore Brittany Hadley (Jasper, NY/Jasper-Troupsburg) each had five points for Keuka.
Junior Jessica Bandrowski (Center Moriches, NY/Center Moriches) added 6 assists, 5 steals, 5 rebounds and 4 points for Keuka, which limited Cobleskill to 25.4 percent shooting (16-for-63) while forcing 26 turnovers.
The Storm led 21-18 with 7:23 remaining in the first half before Hadley knocked down a jumper that started an 11-0 run. Gravel scored five points, including a three-point play, and McDonald added four points during the run as Keuka took a 32-18 lead.
Leading 32-22 starting the second, the Storm scored the first 17 points to pull away and win their second straight conference game. Szwec scored five points while Mouzon and Pendrak each had four points to fuel the run. The lead grew to 55-26 on a layup from Mouzon, and the Green and Gold led by at least 19 points the rest of the way.
Kady Porterfield had 11 points and nine rebounds while Heidi Anderson had 10 points for the Tigers (1-6, 0-1).
The Storm are off for the remainder of 2012 before traveling to Penn State-Berks (Jan. 6, 2013) and Lancaster Bible (Jan. 7). Keuka's next home game is vs. Gallaudet University at 1 p.m. on Jan. 12.
