NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – The State University of New York at New Paltz women's basketball team (7-0, 3-0 SUNYAC) opened the game with an 11-0 run and never looked back as it handed The College at Brockport (3-6, 0-2 SUNYAC) an 80-51 defeat in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup Friday evening at the Hawk Center. The win improves upon the best overall record to open a season in program history.
Senior guard Kahsyrah Bryant (North Babylon, N.Y./North Babylon) and senior forward Alex McCullough (Delmar, N.Y./Bethlehem Central) combined for the first 11 points of the game before Brockport finally got on the board at the 16:09 mark. The Hawks bounced right back, eventually outscoring the Golden Eagles, 44-19, in the first half.
The Hawks shot 51.4 percent from the field in the opening half, including 63.6 percent from three-point range. Their defense was lights out, holding Brockport to just 29.2 percent shooting in the first half.
The second half was played much closer, as the Hawks outscored Brockport, 36-32. New Paltz kept the hot shooting going, as it made 43.3 percent of its shots and 55.6 percent of its threes. Brockport's field goal percentage improved to 34.4 percent in the second stanza, including 40 percent from long range.
Freshman guard/forward Jennifer Sixsmith (Plainview, N.Y./Saint Anthony's) led all scorers with a career-high 20 points on the evening. She was also 6-of-9 from the distance. Bryant added 15 points in the win, while McCullough picked up 10 in just 12 minutes on the court.
Alexandra Marshall led the Golden Eagles with nine points and 10 rebounds on the night. Hannalee Fordyce also pulled down 10 boards and contributed six points.
The Hawks finished the night shooting 47.7 percent from the field, including an astounding 60 percent from behind the arc. The Golden Eagles hit 32.1 percent of shots from the floor in the loss, and were successful on 33.3 percent of three-pointers.
The Hawks look to keep their streak alive tomorrow, Dec. 8, with a SUNYAC matchup against SUNY Geneseo. Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. from the Hawk Center.
