Strong Second Half Lifts Gwynedd-Mercy Past Neumann, 89-75

GWYNEDD VALLEY, PA. – Gwynedd-Mercy held Neumann to 28.6% shooting in the second half en route to an 89-75 Colonial States Athletic Conference win Wednesday night at the Griffin Complex.

Sophomore Shea Wassel had game-highs of 21 points and 14 rebounds as she was one of five Griffins to hit double digits. Sophomore Natasha Matthews also recorded a double-double, totaling 19 points and 10 rebounds.

Erica Marvel netted 17 points to lead Neumann (2-4, 2-1 CSAC). Bethany Humenik added 10 points, eight boards, and six assists.

After a first-half chess match where each team shot 48%, the teams were knotted at 44-44 at the break. No team led by more than five during the first 20 minutes which also saw 11 ties and nine lead changes.

In the second, the Griffins forced 10 turnovers and outrebounded the Knights, 24-14. GM was good on 15-of-31 (48%) from the floor while Neumann was just 8-of-28 (28%) including 0-for-8 from behind the arc.

GM would build a five-point lead early in the second, but couldn't find separation from Neumann. The Griffins got into early foul trouble as the Gwynedd's fouls put Neumann in the bonus with just under 11 minutes to play and the Knights took advantage, going 15-of-20 from the line to stay within reach.

Laura Scott's jumper made it a seven-point game (74-67) with 3:41 to play. Two free throws from junior Lauren Smith and a big three-pointer from sophomore Kristen Fuery off a turnover gave Gwynedd a 12-point edge and a lead they would not relinquish.

Smith had a team-high five assists to go along with her 13 points. Fuery knocked down three of the team's seven treys to finish with 11. Junior Jordan Dominic scored nine of her 14 points in the second half. For the game GM was 31-of-64 (48%) from the floor and held a big 42-29 rebound edge.
