Salem, Mass. - The visiting Trinity College Bantams handed the Salem State University Vikings a 64-45 loss this afternoon, holding the home team to its lowest point total of the season. Salem State shot just 24% from the field, including 14% (4-29) in the first half, and fell to 4-3 on the season. The Bantams improved to 4-2.
Trinity scored 11 of the final 13 points in the first half, however, and took a commanding 28-13 lead into the locker room. The Bantams kept the pressure on, as junior forward Shantel Hanniford (Nantucket, Mass.) scored six quick points to begin the second stanza, and the Vikings continued to struggle. Trinity led, 47-29, with 10 minutes left in the game when five different Bantams scored in an 11-0 run to give Trinity its largest lead, 58-29, and put the game out of reach.
Trinity had three players score in double figures, led by Hanniford with 11 and classmate Taylor Murtaugh (New York, N.Y.) and first-year guard Christina Raiti (Plainview, N.Y.) with 10 apiece. The Bantams, led by junior Moriah Sweeney (Ramsey, N.J.) with 10 rebounds and rookie Mackenzie Griffin (Stamford, Conn.) with nine boards, had a decisive advantage on the boards, 54-43.
