Morgan 3-Point Barrage

Worcester, MA --- Kelly Morgan (Brookline, NH) drained all four of her 3-point attempts as she tallied 16 of her career-high 18 points in the second half to lead WPI to a 68-56 victory over MIT in a NEWMAC women's basketball contest on Saturday afternoon. 

WPI is now 3-2 on the young season and 1-1 in conference play while MIT sees its records even at 3-3 overall and 1-1 in NEWMAC action. 

Morgan canned six of her eight-field goal attempts in the second stanza.  After MIT clawed back to within eight points at 42-34 midway through the second half, Morgan went off for 13 points in the next 4:58, buried all five of her attempts from the field to keep the visiting Engineers at bay. 

The first half saw three ties and a pair of lead changes as the home-standing Engineers clung to a 17-15 advantage with 5:30 to go before intermission.  WPI then rattled off 11 of the next 13 points fueled by a pair of baskets from Siena Mamayek (Melrose, MA) and capped off by a Dani Davis (East Granby, CT) 3-pointer to push the score to 28-17 right before the break.  Theresa Logan's (Southboro, MA) 10-point first half gave the hosts a 30-19 halftime bulge. 

Joining Morgan in double figures for WPI were Logan and Davis with 12 and 11 points respectively.  Davis was 2-of-4 from behind the 3-point arc as the Engineers nailed six-of-nine trifectas on the day.  Cindy Chelius (Northfield, NJ) stuffed the stat sheets with six points, four rebounds and a game-high four assists and reserve Lisa Mendez (Yonkers, MA) added nine points, five rebounds and a pair of assists. 

Sabrina Drammis (Hilton Head Island, SC) paced MIT with 13 points off the bench to go along with four rebounds. Tamara Pena (Aliso Viejo, CA) chipped in with 12 points and shared game-high rebounding honors with six while Maya Ramachandran (Fremont, CA) contributed eight points and four rebounds.  Reserves Durva Bhandare (North Brunswick, NJ) and Michelle Battipaglia (Katonah, NH) each tossed in six points for MIT. 

Turnovers were about equal as WPI committed 20 miscues to MIT's 18 but the hosts converted those into a 25-10 edge in points off turnovers.  

Both teams are back in action with home NEWMAC contests on Tuesday afternoon.  WPI hosts Wheaton at 7pm while MIT welcome Coast Guard to Cambridge at 6pm.
