ONEONTA, NY – Hartwick clamped down on visiting Morrisville State (0-5) in the second half, outscoring the Mustangs by a 47-17 margin on the way to a 69-33 victory Saturday at Lambros Arena. The win is Hartwick's fifth in a row.
Ten Hawks registered points on the day with juniors Maria Foglia's (Rensselaer, NY/Catholic Central), Kate Purcell (Buffalo, NY/Mt. Mercy Academy), and freshman Brittney Dumas (Easton, CT/Joel Barlow HS) combining for 40 points, 26 rebounds, 10 assists, and six steals. Foglia scored a game-high 18 points to go along with eight boards, three assists, and two steals. Purcell contributed nine points, and game-highs of 11 rebounds, five assists and four steals. Dumas tallied a career-best 13 points and seven rebounds.
The Hawks raced out to a 9-0 lead and it appeared they would run away with the game. The Mustangs, however, would battle back and cut the lead to just two points on three separate occasions in the half. A Courtney Coley jumper with 3:56 left in the period cut Morrisville's deficit to 18-16, but two free throws from Foglia and a basket from Purcell gave 'Wick a slim 22-16 edge at halftime.
Hartwick would score 16 of its points off of 15 Morrisville turnovers in the opening 20 minutes. Foglia (9) and Purcell (7) combined for 16 of the Hawks' 22 points. As a team, Hartwick shot only 24% (8-for-33) from the floor and it missed all nine of its shots from beyond the three-point arc.
The second half was a different story as the Hawks hit 47% (15-for-32) from the field, out-rebounded the Mustangs 29-12, and forced their opponents into just 29% (7-of-24) shooting. Following a Monique Jadotte three-point basket which shaved the Hawk lead to just three, 27-24, the Hawks would erupt for a 16-0 run over a six and a half minute span to take full control. Lee Arduini (Albany, NY/Academy of the Holy Names) and Dumas would combine for nine of the Hawks' points in the spurt.
Two shots from the line by Foglia would put Hartwick up 20 and the Hawks cruised the rest of the game. 'Wick out-scored the Mustangs 16-1 over the final 4:23 of action.
Hartwick ended the afternoon shooting 35% as a group to Morrisville's 30%. The Hawks controlled the paint with 34 points to Morrisville's 14 and they held a commanding 52-32 edge in rebounds. The Hawks also registered 30 second-chance points.
Arduini ended the game with eight points, all of which came in the second half. Katrina Caulfield (Palmer, MA/Palmer) added four points and five boards. Freshmen Ana Horowitz (Newton, MA/Newton South) contributed six points, Alicia Razanousky (Stuyvesant, NY/Ichabod Crane) added five, and Villarini finished with four points.
The Mustangs were led by Coley's 10 points and eight rebounds. Jennel Paul scored six and Nijee Scott netted five.
Hartwick next plays on Tuesday night in its Empire 8 Conference opener. The Hawks host Utica College at Lambros Arena at 6 p.m.
